Dropped food in the kitchen can be a problem
What does your dog do when you drop some food on the floor? Does he wait for you to allow him to eat it? Probably not, right? He'll probably pounce on the food the moment it hits the floor and gobble it up before you know it. If he eats dangerous food, he may hurt himself.
It would be better if he doesn't eat the dropped piece of food, or only eats it when you allow him to. Patience is something you need to teach your dog.If your dog:
- can't control his impulses, especially around food
- jumps up or barks when he wants something
- gets frustrated when he doesn't get something right away
then this blog is dedicated to you. Let's learn to control our impulses and be patient.
1. Attach a leash 1 - 1.5 metres long to the dog.
2. Throw the treat on the ground in front of you so that your dog can't reach it, but at the same time so that it is not too far away.
3. The dog will probably reach for the treat and pull you towards it. You stand still and hold the leash so that he can't get to the treat.
4. Now give him the command to sit or lie down.
5. The dog will probably be focused on the treat, so he won't listen to you. If the command to sit is not carried out, count to 10 in your mind so that the dog has a chance to solve the problem on his own. If he does obey the command, reward him and allow the treat to be eaten. If you see that nothing has changed and the dog has not obeyed your command, is still focused on the treat and is not paying attention to you, take a few steps in the opposite direction from the treat and with the dog. Then again return to the previous vicinity of the treat so that he does not reach the treat.
6. Again give the command to sit but lie down. If he obeys the command, praise him and allow him to eat the treat. If he still does not obey the command, stop the exercise and hide the treat. Repeat later.
The only way to teach a dog patience is to be patient yourself. This exercise might help. It can be practiced in different situations and on walks. But always start the exercise in a quiet place.
Let me know how it goes :-)
